Porcelain Fixed Bridges

Porcelain fixed bridges done by our dentist at Samuel S. Wong, DDS
Losing a permanent tooth can be a scary situation. Luckily, today’s dental market offers you a wide variety of choices when it comes to restoration treatments. At Samuel S. Wong, DDS, we offer treatments such as porcelain fixed bridges to help repair the function and appearance of your smile.

It is important to act quickly after tooth loss or extraction. If neglected, it can cause serious damage to your overall oral health. Porcelain fixed bridges can provide a permanent solution to a potentially dangerous problem.

What Are Porcelain Fixed Bridges?

A porcelain fixed bridge helps to fill the void created by a missing tooth. Bridges are traditionally made up of two dental crowns, “bridged” together by a prosthetic tooth or “pontic.” The crowns are placed onto the surrounding teeth and serve as anchors for your restoration.

We use porcelain for fixed bridges because of its incredible design capabilities. With porcelain, we can create a flawless replacement by replicating the form and function of natural teeth.

Porcelain fixed bridges can restore your ability to properly speak and chew. They can help maintain the shape of your face, and prevent your remaining teeth from shifting. A bridge is also an effective way of distributing your bite force properly.

The Process of Receiving a Porcelain Fixed Bridge

The first step to receiving a porcelain fixed bridge is a consultation visit. Dr. Wong will review your dental history and make sure that a fixed bridge (vs removable dentures) is right for you.

The procedure is usually divided into two visits. During your first visit, we will prepare your surrounding teeth. Preparation involves removing a portion of the tooth enamel to accommodate for the crown. After we have reshaped your teeth, we will take impressions of your mouth, and send them to a dental laboratory. Technicians will use these impressions to create your final restoration. During this time, we may give you a temporary bridge to help protect your exposed teeth and gums.

At the second visit, we will remove the temporary bridge (if you have one), and place your new porcelain fixed bridge. The bridge will be checked and adjusted if necessary. It may take several visits to achieve a proper fit. Once we have achieved the right fit, we will use a special cement to keep the bridge firmly attached.

How to Care for a Porcelain Bridge

The success of your bridge largely depends on a solid foundation offered by your surrounding teeth. We recommend you brush and floss twice daily to avoid decay and gum disease. You will also need to clean in between the bridge and your gums. We recommend the use of a specialized brush or floss to reach difficult pockets. Make sure to schedule regular checkups and professional cleanings. Under the right care, your bridge can last a decade or more.
